Concert: Jose Lezcano, Classical Guitar; Hingham Sunday Sound Series

The Boston Classical Guitar Society presents classical guitarist Jose Lezcano, a twice Grammy-nominated composer and performer, whose programs feature tradition and Latin American repertory, and his own original compositions. He has played as a recitalist, collaborative musician, and concerto soloist in concert halls in North and South American, as well as Europe and Asia. Mr Lezcano is Professor of Music at Keene State College where teachers guitar, and directs the Guitar Orchestra and Latin Ensemble, as well as teaching courses in music.

He has played at the Blue Note in New York City and Japanese National Television, and has played with Esperanza Spalding, The Kennedys, Joe Jencks of Brother Sun, Micael League of Snarky Puppy, Brooks Williams and Jim Kweskin. The main purpose of this class is to work on performance skills and learn how to handle the stress and anxiety that can arise while performing in front of others. Past Performance Classes have provided students with a more practical and confident approach in their playing. The class is primarily aimed toward classical guitarists, but is open to all levels and guitar styles, and other related instruments. During the class many effective strategies for performing will be taught, along with discussion about practicing and other related topics. There will also be time for personal coaching on specific pieces if the student is interested.

Festival: The Connecticut Guitar Festival, Ben Verdery, Artistic Director

The second annual Connecticut Guitar Festival presents a veritable smorgasbord of guitar events, covering many guitar styles, including concerts, workshops, master classes, and classes. Featured artists include, Mak Grgic, Alturas Duo, Arlen Roth, Ben Verdery, Paul Green, Hiroya Tsukamoto, Andy Mckee, Javier, Farias, Joe Kiernan, Drew Pinto, and Davi Madsen. There are many events to choose from happening throughout the week.

Guitar luthiers and guitar sellers will be showing their wares on Sunday February 10, at 11am in the morning. Sellers include Joseph Burros of Fine Musical Instruments showing Kenny Hill New World and Cordoba Classical Guitars.

The Connecticut Guitar Society presents Stephen Nystrup whose influences growing up were Sandy Bull, Tom Rush, John Fahey, and Jorma Kaukonen. Steve's music has been described as driving, rhythmic, healing and uplifting. His audiences leave a performance feeling they have been on a spiritual, musical journey. Steve is a two time Critic's Choice of The Harford Advocate and received an Emmy Award for his music scoring of "Amistad Connecticut" for CPTV. He has three solo CDs, including his newest CD, Another Sleepless Night, which highlights his songwriting and singing.

A focus of the program will be two outstanding 'ūds from the MFA's collection, one made in Constantinople in 1899 by Emanuel Venios, and the other made in Damascus in 1928 by Tawfik Nahat. Both Veins and Nahat are considered the most significant makers of such instrument from modern times, and the Nahat 'ūd is aguably the most high decoded example ever created.

Margaret Herlehy currently is resident artist in music at the University of New Hampshire.
